Basic Information | |
Specificity | This antibody recognizes and binds progesterone. It also cross reacts with other steroids like 5,α-pregnanedione. |
Alternative Name | P4; pregn-4-ene-3,20-dione |
UniProt | |
Immunogen | The original antibody was generated by immunizing BALB/c mice with 11-α- hydroxyprogesterone-11-hemisuccinyl-bovine serum albumin (BSA) conjugate. |
Application Notes | This antibody binds progesterone, which is an endogenous steroid female sex hormone, involved in the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and embryogenesis of humans and other species. The hormone is produced by the corpus luteum in the ovaries and later by the placenta during pregnancy and is necessary for maintenance of pregnancy as it prevents the breakdown of the endometrium. This antibody against progesterone may be used for the study its role in the female reproductive system and uring pregnancy. It may also be used as an immunological prevention of pregnancy. The antibody is reported to have blocking effects and prevention of pregnancy in mice (PMID:7057905). Passive immunization of mice with this antibody has anti-fertility effects by blocking implantation (PMID:2373979, 3411286). This antibody is also reported to cross react with other steroids (PMID: 3123368, 7632616). |
