Specificity
This antibody is specific for human CD71. CD71 is a transmembrane glycoprotein composed of two disulfide-linked monomers joined by two disulfide bonds. CD71 is required to import iron in cells using endocytosis.

The mouse version of this antibody was raised by immunizing a BALB/c mouse with human T cells.
Application Notes
To study a new method of immunophenotyping blood lymphocyte subpopulations in neonates and young infants, flow cytometry was performed on neonatal cord blood samples using the mouse version of this antibody (De Vries et al, 1999; pmid:10212087) (De Vries et al, 1999; pmid:10445337). To immunophenotype EC, PBMC or whole blood samples, immunolabeling was preformed using the mouse version of this antibody (Prens et al, 1996; pmid:8932583).

The relevance of adhesion molecules, CD36 and epidermal IL-1 in psoriasis was studied in vitro in the autologous mixed epidermal cell - T lymphocyte reaction (MECLR). Their level of expression was quantitated in epidermal cell suspensions (ECS) from patients with psoriasis and their function was assessed by blocking with specific mAbs and antisera or by depleting CD36+ cells from the ECS prior to the MECLR. ECS from psoriatic lesions contained increased numbers of CD36+ (23 +/- 12%), ICAM-1(+) (31 +/- 14%) and IL-1(+) (57 +/- 21%) cells.
